Surviving the Giro

evans2The conditions in this year’s Giro d’ Italia have been horrendous…bordering on surreal.

Torrential rain, snow and unusually cold conditions have made this less a race, and more a dark contest of attrition.  During stage 15 the riders endured four hours of ice-cold rain and mist, followed by driving snow on the Col du Galibier. And that was after moving the finish nearly 300 meters lower in elevation.

In the picture above we see a simply wrecked Cadel Evans after finishing and managing to hold onto second place in the general classification. Below, the peloton crosses the alpine zone before the finish, Vincenzo Nibali racing through 40 degree mist wearing the Maglia Rosa.
